Simple tips and tricks to keep yourself….and your white shoes…. trendy!
Trends are something I never thought I would be slow to pick up on until last week when my husband’s ultra-cool 30-year-old niece and her boyfriend came for a visit. I noticed they were both wearing white sneakers. Clean, bright, white, crisp… it reminded me of the 80s when we wore white sneakers with our pegged pants. After that era, I’ve only even worn colored gym shoes or over the top platform shoes, wedges, heels and now slip-on blingy canvas.
I wondered what I was missing, after all, I thought all white gym shoes were saved for suburban dads. And then a few days later, I met my bestie for her 15-year-old daughter’s birthday party, and guess what, all the girls were wearing all white shoes. Okay, so we are on to something, this is the must-have casual shoe of the moment.
As I started investigating which white shoes would soon be mine, and there are plenty of amazing options available it’s hard to just pick one.

4 DIY hacks for making your go-to whites stand out in a crowd!
Bling em up!
Grab some old rhinestone costume jewelry and glue it onto the top of the shoe. Find necklaces that are broken and earrings that are mismatched and pull the backings off of them with pliers. Using Shoe-Gu, adhere the gems onto the shoes and you have updated basic white kicks with some elevated elegance.
Add some color!
One crafting trend of the year is painting shoes. Once you have worn out those canvas whites, take some fabric paint and color your shoes new again.
Keep them bright!
One of the tricks we used to use to keep our shoes white back in the day was to use a toothbrush with a mixture of 1:1 baking soda and white distilled vinegar on the rubber soles. You can also use toothpaste to clean up the rubber parts White nail polish is helpful to hide cracks in the leather and white shoe polish is always great in a pinch if you have no time to let them dry.
Wear them right!
There’s really no wrong way to sport white shoes this year. They pair well with a short skirt, cropped denim jeans, midi skirt, black leggings, sporty loungewear. It’s all about a comfortable, casual style and keeping them bright white.
I love how fashion always circles back around and here we are 2021. I’m excited for my husband and I to get white sneakers and walk around like we know what’s up. Here’s to always picking up on trends and learning something new every day!
