Update your holiday decor with Pillows!

I always say, the holidays are like giving your home a temporary makeover…and when it comes to the holidays, more is more and less is a bore!  Once the tree is trimmed and the stocking are hung, don’t leave the couches bare; add some festive pillows to finish the room.  I’ve created a pillow for my home to give you a diving board for inspiration…. it all started after I watched a documentary on Alexander McQueen and wanted to work with the theme of “avant-garde couture meets the holidays” but I think it ends up looking more like the Grinch…and that’s okay because it’s all beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Here are the details on how I did it…

SUPPLIES:

  • Sewing and embroidery machine
  • Enough fabric for the front and back of the pillow and some fabric scraps to make the embellishments
  • Trim
  • Zipper
  • Fairfield Pillow Form

LETS MAKE IT:

First, select a holiday design and embroider it on a 19″ x 19″ piece of fabric of your choice.  I went with a non-holiday image but used holiday colors for fabric and thread. If you don’t have an embroidery machine you can create an iron-on image instead!

TOP TIP: Make your pillow one inch smaller than the pillow form so it’s nice and fluffy. If you have a 18″ x 18″ pillow form, make your final pillow case 17″x17″.  For this demo, I used a 20″x 20″ pillow form.

Next, cut fabric scraps to create the hat, pin on and top-stitch down.

Add the faux fur trimming and pom pom to the hat and sew in place.

Pin the fringe around the fabric square with the fringe facing in and right sides together. Sew in place.

Pin the zipper on the back piece of coordinating fabric and sew in place. And do the same with the other side of the zipper on to the front face of the pillow. The right sides will be facing in.

TOP TIP: I like to use tape to secure the fringe while I am sewing the zipper and sides together so it doesn’t flop around and get caught up in the seams while I am sewing.

After you sew the zipper in, sew the remaining side seams together. Be sure to leave a portion of the zipper open so you can easily turn it right side out.

Turn the pillow case right side out, remove the tape and insert your Fairfield Poly-fil Premier Pillow!

Zip closed, fluff it up and you’re finished!
