Earth Day Upcycled Fashion Live Show

Reclaim & Rewear: Earth Day Upcycles with Style

Every year on Earth Day, we’re reminded of the impact our choices have on the planet but sustainability doesn’t have to mean giving up style. In fact, it’s the perfect time to get creative with what we already have. Whether you’re a seasoned upcycler or just curious about rethinking your wardrobe, this blog is your guide to stylish, sustainable DIYs that celebrate the art of reuse. This month on Creative Living,  Jane is sharing two inspiring fashion transformations and highlighting the beauty of working with deadstock fabric. Let’s reclaim, rewear, and renew….together!

This Earth Day, we’re bringing new life to old clothes and embracing fashion that’s kinder to the planet.  In this special edition of Creative Living on Sewing Machines Plus Take Over Tuesday, Jane will dive into the power of upcycling, why it matters more than ever, and how you can get inspired to rethink your wardrobe one garment at a time.

Earth Day is the perfect reminder that even small choices like how we shop, sew, and style can make a big impact. The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters globally, and millions of pounds of textiles end up in landfills each year. The good news? We have the power to change that.

We’ll be talking about deadstock fabric, which refers to leftover or overproduced fabric that would otherwise go to waste. Using deadstock is a great way for sewists and designers to source beautiful materials sustainably and it’s a key part of the slow fashion movement.

In the spirit of upcycling, Jane will feature two fashion-forward transformations that you can try at home.

First, she will walk through how to start turning a pair of cargo pants into a skirt. It’s a great way to reuse structured garments and give them a totally new silhouette.  She will show you where to cut, how to shape the new form, and ways to work with the pants’ built-in features like pockets and seams to your creative advantage.

Then, Jane will demo a second project: how to reimagine two skirts as a cape. This project brings the drama in the best way.  Jane will walk through how to line up the skirts, cut the shapes, and begin the transformation process into a statement piece that’s both sustainable and totally wearable.

Throughout the show, Jane will be sharing Earth Day facts, creative tips, and encouragement to explore upcycling as a way to express your style and reduce waste. Whether you’re an experienced maker or just getting started with sewing, this show is designed to inspire action and spark a little imagination.

By the end, you’ll see how reclaimed fashion can be stylish, personal, and powerful and you’ll walk away ready to Reclaim and Rewear with confidence.

Sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or boring. It can be bold, expressive, and uniquely you. By upcycling pieces like cargo pants or thrifted skirts, and exploring options like deadstock fabric, you’re not just creating something beautiful, you’re making a difference.

We hope these Earth Day ideas sparked your imagination and gave you new ways to look at the clothes already in your closet. Keep creating, keep repurposing, and keep showing the world that fashion with purpose is always in style.
