The Zipper was originally invented in 1893 in Chicago and called the “Clasp Locker. Zippers have been on trend and on the catwalk for many seasons now and you can really add some great embellishments to your old clothes just by adding a zipper. Jane has a great way to redesign a boring shirt with a zipper for fashion over function. Zipper tee’s are super easy to make and only require a few steps.
Arrange the zipper where you want it
Play around with the placement of the zipper and decide where it looks the best on your shirt. An exposed zipper makes for a great look!
Pin the zipper down
First, use a four inch locked zipper and pin it just off your collar. For this shirt, we are adding a lapel zipper. It should be facing down the side of the shirt and towards the underarms.
Sew it into place
Use the zipper foot on your sewing machine and sew the zipper into place.
Cut the fabric
Next, use your scissors and cut the fabric underneath the zipper piece. Then, zip the zipper back up.
And there you have it, a super simple way to upcycle your old, boring t-shirt! A zipper is a great way to add an embellishment to give a more stylish look to your shirt.
