2 Tips for Living a Healthier Life While Working a Desk Job
Working a desk job requires lots of sitting and can be as hard on your body as smoking cigarettes. Jane Clauss talks to a nurse practitioner from Rush University Medical Center about tips for staying healthy and active, even while sitting behind a desk.
It can be easy to get lost in our work causing us to forget to get up and move around. Here are some tips for staying healthy while working a desk job.
1-Get Up and Walk Around Every Hour
Setting a timer for every hour is a good reminder to get up and walk around for at least five minutes. This allows the blood to circulate through the body and keeps your muscles active which decreases the risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Under the desk ellipticals are a great and new way of staying in shape as well. Try using an exercise cycle or treadmill while you work. An exercise cycle is great to maximize movement while sitting down and working. Find a coworker who wants to be a walking buddy. During lunch or breaks, take a walk around the building or outside. Taking the stairs and parking further away can also help add walking into your daily routine.
2-Have Daily Meetings While Standing
There is no reason that meetings have to be held sitting around a table. Next time you host a meeting, stand up and encourage others to stand during it too. Walking is another great way to have a meeting. Standing can help improve physical and mental health as well as productivity. It helps reduce the risk of blood clots and improves circulation. Host your next meeting standing up!
Getting up and moving during the workday is important for maintaining physical and mental health. Make it a priority to walk and stand throughout the day in order to live a healthier life.
