3 Ways to Finding Relief from Vertigo
Vertigo can impact daily life by causing extreme amounts of dizziness making it hard to walk, stand, or even sit without feeling unbalanced. Jane Clauss talks to Clayton McClure, Physical Therapy assistant at Fyzical Lincoln Park, about finding relief from Vertigo.
What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness and can cause a false sense of movement or spinning when you are standing still, and stems from when crystals in the inner ear get dislodged. The dizziness may cause nausea and vomiting. Vertigo doesn’t always have a clear cause, but ear infections and head trauma can trigger a bout with it. It’s important to contact your doctor if you start to experience dizziness from vertigo. Here are three tips for relieving vertigo symptoms.
1-See a Physical Therapist Recommended by Your Doctor
It is important to see a doctor right away if you are experiencing symptoms of vertigo because they can recommend you to a physical therapist. Vertigo can be treated with different types of head movements to move the crystals back to where they should be. One move that they might try is the Epley Maneuver.
2-Points of Contact with Unmoving Objects
If you can’t get into a physical therapist in time, try some at home methods of relief. Try increasing your points of contact with unmoving objects to help get rid of symptoms. Sit in a chair with your back flat against it, arms on the armrest, feet planted on the ground, and focus on breathing techniques. This helps to ground yourself by focusing on unmoving objects.
3-Fixate your Gaze on a Single Point
Another method of vertigo relief at home is to fix your gaze on a single point in order to help get rid of dizziness. This is an easy and simple way to help relieve vertigo at home.
Dizziness and imbalance from vertigo can really affect day to day life. Contact your doctor if you suspect you have vertigo because it is treatable.
