Floating Tea Cup Centerpiece

Amaze your Guests with a Floating Tea Cup Centerpiece

Tablescaping is one of my favorite things to do. The ideas are endless and you can get creative with just about any theme. For my spring themed dinner parties – or a wedding shower – I love to add a special centerpiece that has everyone in awe. This floating tea cup display does just that and like magic, you can create this stunning centerpiece for your next party.  Scroll down for the big reveal on how this fancy china tea cup gets suspended in-air spilling flowers galore! It’s so easy and it’s a great way to recycle old cups & saucers!

Sip up the rest of your tea and let’s make it.

Supplies:

  • Ceramic Tea Cup & Saucer
  • Aluminum Fork
  • 4-6 Large heavy bolts
  • Faux Flowers and leaves
  • Hot glue
  • Heavy duty cement glue like E6000 or Beacon Bonder
  • Masking or Painters tape

Floating Tea Cup Project Supplies

To create the illusion of a floating tea cup the secret is a FORK!  You know what they say, stick a fork in it and you’re done!  Use a fork to suspend the tea cup by first, bending it at the handle and then bending it at the base of the fork tines.

Next, using E6000 or Bonder, glue the handle of the fork to the inside of the tea cup. Set the adhesion together with low tack tape – I like to use painters tape.

Then glue the fork tines to the saucer and set the adhesion site with tape. Follow directions on the packaging for the glue you purchase and use.

It will need to sit for 24-48 hours to completely dry — so during this time find another DIY project to start!  It’s a good idea to support the tea cup underneath and in front of the saucer with a stack of heavy books on both sides so it doesn’t slide while the glue is setting.

Off balanced tea cup and saucer base

Now with the base of the project solid, it’s a tad off balance because the saucer is small and the tea cup is heavy. How do we balance it?  If you have a heavy weight you can glue it to the top of the saucer; I like to use several heavy bolts. I know, it seems odd to add bolts to such a lovely, soft display but you will cover the metal with faux leaves and your centerpiece will stand up to anything!

After the weights are set and your display is balanced, glue them down using E6000 or Bonder, and let it dry and set for another 24 hours.

Once your display is balanced, it’s time to make it pretty!  Start by covering the metal bolts with faux leaves. Using hot glue, cover the bolts with leaves, allow some to stick out over the saucer as the foundation of your garden.

You can also add some character to your floating tea cup with a little ceramic garden fairy statue.

Finally, using hot glue, add flower embellishments to cover the saucer!

Be sure to cover the fork all the way up inside the tea cup and flowing down onto the saucer.
