EMPIRE uses fashion as entertainment…Thanks to costume designer Rita McGhee we all get inspired by the fabulous clothing we see week to week! She’s using a mixture of class, beauty, elegance and street, essentially blending both worlds. It’s high-end; it’s low-end
From Cookie to Lucious and Anika to Hakeem you can capture their looks with these thoughtful ideas from Bloomingdales.
No doubt it is the HOTTEST show on TV and everyone is talking about the fashion… Thanks to costume designer Rita McGhee we can mix high-end low-end and everything in between to get our EMPIRE look!
So I hit up Bloomingdale’s to help me put these looks together but you can raid your own closet, thrift store or any vintage shop for help! It doesn’t have to cost a fortune it just need to look good!
Let’s get started with the best character on TV Cookie Lyon… She wears her clothes and makes the sidewalk her catwalk! No dress is too tight for Cookie; her signature look is fur-and-animal print combo.
In my photo, Keisha on the right has on a Maje leopard Dress, Elizabeth & James Fur vest
Oversized hat by August – entire outfit under $600. Ghetto Fabulous, welcome to 2015.
And now for the man in charge, Lucius Lyon! His signature look is professional with a smooth edge…He adds a silk scarf to every outfit and sometimes a newsboy cap.
In my photo, Marco is wearing separates by Theory; jacket and pants. I added a turtleneck that you see Lucious wearing a lot and the signature silk scarf by Aqua – I love the pop of color for any outfit.
The other woman by Lucious’ side is Anika. She’s polished, professional… Remember she’s a debutant so she’s got to dress smart. Especially since she’s Lucious’ finance! Willow is wearing a fitted Ted Baker dress with a back zip and geometric neckline in the hot pink which is a great splash of color for spring. Anika’s wardrobe usually has an interesting cutout or memorable neckline which looks great with her short hair…You can pull your hair back like Willow did to show off the neck.
Hakeem is the tough guy rapper. He’s got his own style that’s cool, relaxed and casual…just like Hakeem’s character. Robert is wearing a John Varvatos Leather Jacket
his own tank top, Alternative Apparel Sweat pants, which I believe, were actually shown in one of the episodes, Timberlands and, finally, his signature is the long chain around his neck as a throwback to 90’s HIP-HOP
So remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the EMPIRE look… Just find similar looks in your closet and dress them up for day or night wear…maybe add a few items from the vintage store to enhance what you already have! Wear what you feel good in and get ready to create your own EMPIRE!
