Derby Day DIY Fascinator

Wear a Derby Day DIY Fascinator on Race Day

The Kentucky Derby is known for fashion and no outfit is complete without a hat! While wide-brimmed beauties are still popular, fascinators are on trend these days. Here’s a simple way to create an eye-popping fascinator using a recycled plastic lid! Let’s make it!

Fascinator Supplies

Supplies:

  • A plastic lid from a sour cream, butter, cottage cheese tub – just be sure to wash it.
  • Fancy fabric, silk, taffeta, tulle
  • Embellishments:  flowers, pom poms, little birds, bows, bobbles.
  • Thin elastic
  • A glue gun

Make it:

First, realize you are doing something good by recycling a plastic lid into a fabulous fascinator! This project is so simple you can make several hats for all the guests at your party!

Trace around the lid on the fancy fabric and cut out the circle.

Cutting fabric to fit the plastic lid

Cut a piece of fabric larger than the plastic lid and wrap the plastic lid with fancy fabric to cover it completely.

Covering lid with fabric

Cut a strip of elastic that fits around the back of your head. You’ll want to make it just snug enough to hold the fascinator on but be sure not to make it too tight, you’ll be wearing this all day.

Measure elastic to fit the head

Glue the elastic strap on the inside of the lid. You will glue one end of the elastic to one side and the other end of the elastic to the other side of the lid.

Finish the inside of the lid

Grab the already cut out circle and glue it to the inside of the lid. This finished the inside so be sure to cover the exposed edges of the raw fabric and elastic.

Now, add your embellishments! Add tulle, a bow, feathers, gems, pom poms, butterflies, birds…There’s really no limit to how creative your headwear can get.  Take the chance to go for some eye-catching height and added personality.  Remember, just because this is a smaller size hat, doesn’t mean low drama!

Add embellishments to the hat

Adding costume jewelry to the fascinator

The best place to wear a fascinator is either on the right or left side of your head. You can wear it front and center too if that’s your style!

Adjusting the placement of the fascinator

And there you have it, your own DIY Derby Day hat.  With this easy tutorial you will be ready for race day in no time!  Get the supplies together and you’re off!
