Derby Day DIY Run for the Roses Decor

The greatest two minutes in sports happens on the first Saturday in May when the Kentucky Derby takes off from the historic Churchill Downs. If you can’t be at the track you might as well throw a watch party. So with your mint juleps in hand, fascinator on your head, and a man in seesucker nearby, create this festive Run for the Roses project for perfectly themed decor. It’s so easy you will be chomping at the bit to get started. Let’s make it!

Derby day Decor Supplies
Supplies:

  • 3D paper mache or cardboard letter U
  • Precision Carving Knife
  • Paint
  • Faux Red Roses
  • Hot Glue
  • Wire Cutters
  • Black Card Stock
  • Scan N Cut

Make it:

Using your precision carving knife carefully cut off the front side of the letter.  Be sure to use slow and precise motion when following the outer edge of the letter.

Take out the cardboard stabilizer inside the 3D letter. You will have a hollow letter.

Paint the outside of the letter metallic gold, bronze or silver.

While the letter is drying, prep the faux roses by cutting off the stems. Sometimes the flowers can simply be pulled off the wire stem.

Paint the inside edges of the letter. There’s no need to paint the entire inside as it will be covered in roses.

While the edge of the letter is drying, cut out the image of a jockey on a horse and a derby hat from the black card stock.

Arrange the roses nestled inside the letter. Use your hot glue to secure them in place.  Be sure to really stuff the U with plenty of roses.

Adding paper embellishments to the project

Make multiple Rose garlands to set around for your Derby Day themed decor. These would look great on your front door, tablescape centerpiece or buffet table decor.

You made it! Your own Rose garland perfect for the “Derby winner’s circle” at your party!  And you’re off!!
